In this tutorial, I’m going to give you a step by step explanation of how you can create a brush in photoshop from scratch! Just like how I did it – From a doodle on paper to a custom brush in Photoshop in less than 30 minutes.
Note: Right click images here and view in a separate window to zoom in and see options/further instructions
First, I sketch out the head of an Alien with a slightly creepy smile on his face. We’ll call him Moe. I used a 2B pencil and a fibre tip pen to draw him out. Make sure that, your drawing is neat before you scan it in.
After scanning Moe, we place him into Photoshop! Right Click on image > Open with Photoshop. This is the part where you get to refine your sketch! Go to Image > Adjustments > Levels . You’ll notice this box popping out (see below). Key in the numerical values (0, 0.40, 206) into those three boxes respectively.
You’ll notice that our Moe looks much better now. The background is now, washed out, and the drawing seems to have a clear definition to it. Use the Eraser tool (E) to smoothen out the edges.
We shall then, crop him out !
You would’ve noticed in the Layers Palette (F7) that image has been locked in as a background image.
Click on that layer > Duplicate that layer by pressing the Alt + Up arrow Key or you can manually duplicate it by dragging it into the “Add New Layer” option at the bottom of the Layers Palette. Now that its duplicated, delete the (locked) Background layer.
Make sure you only have the duplicated layer remaining.
We’re almost there! Just a few more steps to go!
Now that we have MOE ready , Go to Edit > Define Brush Preset… as shown below
Upon clicking Define Brush Preset, a box titled Brush Name will appear on your screen. Key in the name of your brush. In our case, its MOE!!
Your brush is now saved in the Brush Palette! Congratulations!!!
You should be able to find it in the last row of the brush palette! Cool huh?
Here’s how I added the finishing touches to the spaced out wallpaper.
I had my spaced out wallpaper ready. I chose the MOE brush and added a few heads into a new layer.
This is what it looked like:
I duplicated that layer in order to have another set of heads occupy the left corner of the wallpaper.
As you can see from the image above, the “brush layer” has been duplicated. Also, I’ve added a very dark shade of purple to it as well, so they can blend in the back ground .
I then, selected the duplicated layer and pressed Ctrl + T > Right Clicked on it > Clicked Flip Horizontal to have the aliens facing towards the right.
I moved (V) it towards the left corner, and Voila! There you go! We got out SPACED OUT wallpaper!
Experiment with your drawings and create your own custom brushes! J
It’s quite simple!
Go ahead! Have Fun!

The trip…
On April 11th I left Mexico. After a forgotten credit card, an excess luggage fee, hugs and tears (from my friends, not from me!) I was on a plane on my way to Amsterdam. I sat next to a Mexican woman and her baby, her husband is from Norway and she was traveling with [...]
